Physiatry is a branch of medicine that consists of diagnosis, rehabilitation and physical therapy of disabilities caused by an incapacitating disease, whether it’s congenital or acquired. These diseases usually limit physical activity and reduce motor, cognitive, emotion and relational functions of the patient.
The physiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized and works in different environments. The physiatrist works in hospitals, private practices or as a counsellor. They can work in a group setting or independently. They work with muscular diseases as well as neurological diseases. Furthermore, they deal with oncological, cardiological and respiratory diseases that require rehabilitation.
